Research & Philosophy

Following much research during the 1980s, the TAUT system of bracing was developed.  It now forms the major part of Fischer's work and has become the natural choice of most of his clients.

Dr Bernard Richardson
Paul Fischer first met Dr Bernard Richardson in the late 1970s and his work and study of musical instruments encouraged him to take a fresh look at the guitar's construction. This lead on to the development of the TAUT system in the mid 1980s. See Classical Guitar Magazine, January 1985

Alternative Choices of Wood
Paul Fischer brought back ten samples of wood from Brazil to study as suitable alternatives to the rapidly declining supply of rosewood. His work in Brazil along with the selected woods are described in his report to the Winston Churchill Travelling Fellowship. See Classical Guitar Magazine, July -August 1984His work was timely, as within 9 years Brazilian rosewood (dalbergia nigra) was placed on appendix 1 of CITES.

Winston Churchill Travelling Fellowship

Paul Fischer has travelled extensively, particularly to Germany and Brazil, for the special woods required thus ensuring that only the best quality is used. In 1983 he was awarded a Southern Arts research bursary and a Winston Churchill Travelling Fellowship to extend his research in the forests of Brazil.
